It was announced this Wednesday via Twitter that AB 36 (Bloom, D-Santa Monica) was being withdrawn from consideration. “I am asking that AB 36 be moved to Rules so we can continue to work towards reasonable reforms to Costa-Hawkins to deliver meaningful protections to the millions of California renters who are struggling to remain housed,” said Assemblyman Richard Bloom.
Those following the bill indicated that the measure was far short of needed votes to pass the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee. The bill is unlikely to be heard again this year.
AB 1482 (Chiu, D-San Francisco) was approved by the committee on a 6-1 vote and would establish “a maximum allowable rent increase for housing.” Affordable housing providers are exempted from this bill.
