LeadingAge California’s three sponsored bills on affordable senior housing have passed their policy committees and are poised for passage in the Legislature.
- Master Plan on Aging Affordable Senior Housing Task Force: SB 611 (Caballero), requires the Governor to establish a task force to provide input on housing issues to develop the Master Plan on Aging. SB 611 requires the task force to report finding and recommendations on: increasing the supply of affordable housing for older adults, increasing the supply of affordable inter-generational housing for older adults and families, reducing barriers to providing health care and social services to older adults in affordable housing, and enabling individuals to access home modification and safety assessment services that enable aging in place.
- Senior Properties in the Multifamily Housing Program: SB 623 (Jackson) address the housing needs of seniors by codifying the current practice of the Department of Housing and Community Development of using updated census data (the American Community Survey) to determine the amount of assistance the Department provides for the building of housing for senior citizens through its Multifamily Housing Program. Because the senior population is increasing relative to the rest of the population, using updated data will assure that the needs of seniors are more adequately met.
- HUD 202 Funding: AJR 15 (Bloom) state the Legislature’s support for federal funding of at least $600 million per year to support the construction and operation of affordable housing through the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program and would call on the President of the United States and the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to support significantly increased funding for that program.
The Legislature is on a month-long recess and will begin hearing bills on August 12.
