Legislators Join Call for Master Plan on Aging

LeadingAge California’s 2019 RISE Summit featured many of the legislative leaders and luminaries responsible for advancing aging policy in California, including State Treasurer Fiona Ma and former Assembly Speaker and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

LeadingAge California President & CEO Jeannee Parker Martin moderated a legislative panel discussion with Sen. Scott Wiener, Asm. Adrin Nazarian and Asm. Eloise Gomez Reyes who each shared their perspectives as chairs of key legislative committees impacting aging policy.

Recognizing the urgency of a rapidly increasing older adult population in California, all three legislative leaders emphasized the pressing need to prioritize seniors and aging issues inside the Capitol. Their conversation highlighted three issue areas integral to advancing effective aging policies – workforce, long-term services and supports, and housing – and expressed that a coordinated approach will be crucial to ensuring that older adults have access to the resources essential to living a long, happy, fulfilling life.

Closing out the discussion, the speakers touched on what it will take to make sure that creative and innovative solutions are crafted that protect one of California’s most vulnerable populations. Sen. Wiener, Asm. Nazarian and Asm. Gomez Reyes agreed that a Master Plan on Aging is the natural next step to making this happen.

LeadingAge California is committed to supporting the development of a master plan and look forward to working with California’s leaders to champion protections for our older adults to thrive and have access to worry-free, high-quality care.
